by | 7 Nov 2018 | Events | 0 comments

3-4.30pm, Weds 14th November 2018.

3.213, University Place, Oxford Road.

Speakers:

  • Anne Engelhardt (Kassel)
  • Madelaine Moore (Kassel)
  • Pete Lampard (Univ. Manchester)

This session – co-organised with the Global Political Economy Research Cluster – will explore the contemporary relevance of materialist theories to the understanding of social movements. Englehardt asks whether airports and ports provide ‘logistical power’ for Brazilian social and labour movements. Moore considers commodification and the reproduction of labour in relation to the Irish protests against water charges. And Lampard extends Raymond Williams’ cultural materialism in order to understand movement practices as simultaneously cultural, material and social.
